How to Pay for Home Repairs and Renovations

There are many things about doing home renovations and repairs that are flexible. You can change the color of the walls, add new appliances to the kitchen, or even add on a spare room. However, the one thing that isn’t flexible is the fact that the money to pay for those renovations has to come from somewhere. For everything from installing solar panels in Arizona to renovating the basement, there is a price, and if you’re strapped for cash the money has to come from somewhere.

The following are a few of the top ways out there to finance your home renovations and repairs. Hopefully, one of them will work well for your needs.

Online payday loans

Payday loans online have become more and more popular over the last few years. They are relatively easy to get and can be paid back on payday. In many cases, you can get anywhere from $500 to a $1,000, sometimes more, to finance the renovations you have to have. You do need to check and be sure that payday loans are available in your state, however, as they are illegal in some.

Save up the cash

If you’re in no hurry to get the renovations done, then saving up the cash to pay for them is certainly the best way to go. However, if your repairs or renovations are an emergency situation, this might not be the best option for you.

Get a loan from family or friends

Borrowing money from your family and friends is probably the last thing you want to do, but if every other option fails, it might be your last resort. Make sure, however, that you get in writing what you’re borrowing and how much you need to pay back. This ensures you won’t have hurt feelings down the line.

Sweat equity is a thing

If you are able and have friends who are able, a dinner and a fun evening may help you get your home repairs and renovations done quickly. You will still have to pay for the materials, but the labor will be free. On top of that, you’ll have full control of the project, but on the other hand, there could be a learning curve. This means, it might be easier to save and pay someone to do it instead. The choice is yours and should be according to your budget.

Use a credit card

There are quite a few credit cards out there that work well to pay for home renovations and repairs. If you have the credit and the balance on your credit cards allows it, this is a way to pay in full for your repairs and renovations and just pay a monthly payment to your credit card company. You have to be careful that you aren’t getting in over your head, though, as interest and late fees on late payment on a card can put you into debt if you aren’t careful. Choose the card with the lowest APR of course, and go from there with your renovation project.

Contractor financing

It is possible if your credit is good enough that you might be able to find a contractor who will finance the project and take monthly payments. Many contractors have good relationships with the bank or loan companies and can help you get financing, as well.

These are just a few of the top ways that you can pay for home repairs and renovations. If they aren’t an emergency, saving to pay for them is your best option, but if it is then a few of these options could work for you.
